The first stretch of mild weather changes the rhythm of the streets. Gardens reopen fully, outdoor tables become useful again, and major cultural institutions begin coordinating programs that extend beyond their own buildings.
Spring is also one of the most demanding periods for accommodation and transportation. International fairs can fill rooms quickly, while installations and temporary road arrangements alter familiar routes. Travelers attending a headline event should reserve early and leave space for spontaneous discoveries.
Milan’s spring calendar is shaped by running, contemporary art, design, horticulture, and music. April is particularly concentrated, with large professional gatherings overlapping public exhibitions across numerous districts. May provides a gentler pace, bringing garden displays and performances into parks, courtyards, museums, and unexpected neighborhood spaces.
Registration and ticketing systems differ. The marathon requires advance participation arrangements, the furniture fair uses dated admission, and many Design Week installations have limited capacities despite being free. Checking individual schedules each morning is prudent because private presentations, press previews, and public opening hours do not always coincide.
Milano Marathon
The Milano Marathon took place on April 12, following a point-to-point course from Corso Sempione toward a central finish near the Duomo. The race combines elite competition with a large field of amateur runners and associated relay participation. Spectators can watch without tickets, although temporary road closures affect surface transportation along the route for much of the morning.

Milano Art Week
Milano Art Week ran from April 13 to 19, surrounding the miart fair with exhibitions, talks, studio openings, performances, and institutional projects. The program involved museums, foundations, commercial galleries, and independent spaces across the city. Visitors gained more from selecting one geographic cluster per day than attempting to move continuously between distant venues.

Milano Design Week
Milano Design Week transformed the city from April 20 to 26 through exhibitions, installations, product launches, discussions, and experimental projects. Brera, Tortona, Isola, Porta Venezia, the historic center, and several outer districts developed distinct programs. Because the schedule exceeded what anyone could see, organizing visits by neighborhood was considerably more efficient than following individual brand names.

Salone del Mobile.Milano
Salone del Mobile.Milano occupied Fiera Milano Rho from April 21 to 26, bringing more than a thousand furniture and design exhibitors into the exhibition complex. The professional fair is separate from the distributed Fuorisalone program, although the two overlap closely. Visitors should purchase the correct admission category and allow substantial time for walking between halls and reaching Rho by metro or rail.

Orticola di Lombardia
Orticola welcomed visitors to the Indro Montanelli Gardens from May 7 to 10. The annual horticultural exhibition brings specialist nurseries, rare plants, gardening expertise, and landscape ideas into one of the city’s central parks. Entry is ticketed, and serious plant buyers benefit from arriving early, before pathways become crowded and the most unusual specimens are sold.

Piano City Milano
Piano City Milano unfolded from May 15 to 17 through hundreds of performances in public gardens, museums, courtyards, theaters, private homes, and neighborhood spaces. The program crossed classical, jazz, contemporary, and experimental music, with many concerts available without charge after reservation. The gardens of the Gallery of Modern Art remained an important focal point for the citywide festival.
