The easiest journeys begin with knowing when not to use transportation. Much of the historic core is compact, pedestrianized, and better explored on foot, while vehicles become most useful for airport transfers, railway connections, hilltop viewpoints, hospitals, and neighborhoods beyond the Renaissance center. A route that looks short on a map may still involve steep streets, uneven paving, or a long walk with luggage.

The network is organized around trams, urban buses, and regional rail. Trams provide the clearest high-capacity routes, while buses fill the gaps and climb areas the tracks do not reach. Short train journeys can also save time between selected metropolitan stations, although the rules differ slightly from those used for buses and trams.

Florence uses an integrated urban ticket priced at €1.70 and valid for 90 minutes after activation. It covers city buses, both tram lines, and eligible regional-train journeys between designated local stations. Paper tickets must be validated, digital tickets must be activated, and contactless payment is available on board; however, a contactless Tip Tap purchase does not cover regional trains.

The system is straightforward once the central interchanges are understood. Santa Maria Novella connects nearly every major mode, Alamanni–Stazione is the critical tram stop, and San Marco has become a useful northern gateway. Live journey information is important because construction, events, and temporary traffic changes can move stops or alter central bus routes.

Santa Maria Novella Railway Station

Santa Maria Novella is the network’s main interchange, joining high-speed and regional trains with T1, T2, urban buses, and airport connections. Most central hotels are within walking distance, but platforms, tram stops, and bus bays sit on different sides of the complex. Allow extra transfer time with luggage or during major events, and follow station signs rather than crowd flow.

T1 Leonardo Tram at Alamanni–Stazione

T1 runs between Villa Costanza in Scandicci and Careggi, passing Porta al Prato, Alamanni–Stazione, Fortezza, Statuto, and northern residential districts. It is useful for the main station, hospital zone, and park-and-ride facilities. Check the destination display because T1 shares several central stops with T2, and the wrong branch can add an unnecessary transfer.

T2 Vespucci Tram from Florence Airport

T2 links Peretola Airport with San Marco–Università in about 20 minutes, serving Guidoni, Novoli, Santa Maria Novella, Fortezza, and Piazza della Libertà. It is the simplest airport connection for most visitors and uses the standard urban fare. At shared stops, board only a tram displaying the correct terminal, especially around Alamanni and Valfonda each time.

San Marco–Università Transport Hub

San Marco–Università places the T2 terminus beside the Accademia district and within an easy walk of the Duomo. Nearby bus stops extend journeys toward Fiesole, Settignano, and eastern neighborhoods. The square can be crowded, so identify the correct platform before boarding and keep ticket validation separate from route planning. Morning arrivals are usually easier.

Autolinee Toscane Urban Buses

Urban buses reach districts beyond the tram network, including the Oltrarno hills, Campo di Marte, Gavinana, Coverciano, and residential areas north of the center. The standard ticket remains valid for 90 minutes and can be bought digitally, from authorized sellers, or by contactless payment. Buying from the driver costs more, so purchase before boarding when practical.

City-Center C Lines

The compact C1, C2, C3, and C4 routes are helpful when narrow streets or limited mobility make the historic center difficult. They connect areas around Santa Maria Novella, Santa Croce, Santo Spirito, the Lungarni, and nearby hospitals. Routes can change during roadworks or events, so use live stop information rather than an old printed map, particularly around pedestrian zones.

Lines 12 and 13 to Piazzale Michelangelo

Bus lines 12 and 13 provide the most practical public ride to Piazzale Michelangelo and San Miniato al Monte. Their circular patterns approach the hill from different directions and link with Santa Maria Novella-area stops. Crowds build near sunset, and temporary diversions are common, so leave enough time for the return trip and avoid assuming both lines use the same stop.

Line 7 to Fiesole

Line 7 runs from Piazza della Libertà to Fiesole, climbing through residential streets and San Domenico before reaching Piazza Mino. The standard urban ticket covers the trip, making it an inexpensive excursion for archaeological sites and valley views. Check the last return departure, especially after dinner or an evening event, and expect fuller buses on sunny weekends.

Regional Trains within Florence

A valid urban ticket can cover regional trains between selected metropolitan stations, including Santa Maria Novella, Campo di Marte, Rifredi, Statuto, Rovezzano, and Le Cure. These short rail hops can bypass road traffic, but contactless Tip Tap tickets are excluded. Confirm that the train stops locally, retain the ticket until exit, and do not board high-speed services.

Florence Night Bus Network

The expanded night network operates after 10 p.m., with selected routes continuing until about 2 a.m. New and strengthened lines connect the station area with Oltrarno, Galluzzo, Settignano, eastern districts, and communities south of the center. Frequencies are lower than by day, so check the exact stop and departure before leaving a venue, especially after midnight.
